The Hermit & His Beard
The Hermit is a character who lived in the desert obsessing over his beard. At the end of his scene, he 'tears' his beard out of his face.

In order to do this effect, we decided to knit him a beard and attach it to his mask, so he could unravel his beard every night on stage. In order to better incorporate his beard, we decided to give him other facial hair as well.

We pierced holes in the mask with this tool, and laced yarn through the holes, taping it with Gaff tape from the inside.
We gave him eyebrows...
...and a tuft on top of his head.

I took a bit of tacky glue and ran it through the yarn to help it keep it's shape.

When he was finally paired with his beard, he looked like this. We attached the beards by hanging them on metal hooks that were sewn to the mask in the same way the elastic bands were. This way the beard could be removed easily on stage (easier said than done).

The only downside to this plan was that a new beard had to be knit every night, but it wasn't all that bad of a chore, especially because it was only a small rectangular shape and very loosely knit.
